As temperatures rise and the sun shines longer, your skin needs extra care to stay healthy, protected, and glowing all summer long. At O’Donoghue Dermatology, we’ve put together our top dermatologist-approved tips to help you enjoy the season while keeping your skin safe from sun damage, breakouts, and dehydration.
1. Never Skip Sunscreen (Even on Cloudy Days)
The Florida sun is intense year-round, but especially in the summer. Use a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher, and reapply every 2 hours—especially after swimming or sweating.
Our tip: Choose a mineral-based sunscreen with zinc oxide or titanium dioxide for gentle, long-lasting protection. Don’t forget ears, lips, and the tops of your feet!
2. Hydrate Inside and Out
Hot weather and sun exposure can leave your skin feeling parched. Drink plenty of water and use a lightweight, hydrating moisturizer to help prevent dryness and flaking.
Bonus: Look for moisturizers with hyaluronic acid—a summer skin favorite!
3. Switch Up Your Skincare Routine
Your winter skincare may be too heavy for summer. Switch to:
- A gel-based cleanser to remove sweat and oil
- Oil-free moisturizer to avoid clogged pores
- Vitamin C serum to brighten and defend against UV damage
Pro tip: Always apply serums before sunscreen for best results.
